Have you ever purchased something or put on an outfit and felt so happy about it only to start questioning yourself and your feelings when someone else makes an unexpected comment about said item or outfit? It is so easy to tell people to not care about what others think but we are only human. Relying on the thoughts and opinions of others has allowed us to survive high school, large family gatherings, that important job interview and pretty much every social event on the planet. However, there is a difference between relying on the comments of others to determine what is socially acceptable versus relying on them to accept yourself and your own opinions.
Aside from comments about what is socially and culturally acceptable in a particular environment, the next time someone makes a comment about your personal style, however good intentioned, take a step back and determine how relevant that individual is to your taste and style. Do you admire his/her personal style? Even so, try to remember what it was that stirred your interest in the first place. What makes the world infinitely interesting is that we are all different and have unique points of view. Your different is what makes you beautiful and in the grand scheme of things, is what makes the world more interesting.
